2) Are the films I have chosen ok for my age?
On the website ‘Common sense media’ you can look up information about films.
They recommend the film Álien’ for 15+: ‘Dated but still extremely scary. Not for younger kids.’
They recomend ‘War of the worlds’ also for 15+: ‘Alien invasion thriller too scary for young kids.
About ‘Arrival’ they say that it is great for families, Great, deeply thoughtful, compassionate sci-fi tale’. It is for 11+.
3) How did I watch the movies and where, paying special attention to the subject of subtitles?
First I searched for the movies I had chosen on Netflix because we have a Netflix account. But when I looked on Netflix they did not have them. Then I tried Pathé at home (thuis). I hoped that they have all the three movies but they only have the movie ‘Alien’. I hoped that I could watch the movie for free because it is an old one from 1979. But it costs E 7,99 to watch it. That is too expensive. I looked on bol.com. They have ‘Alien’ but it was even more expensive there: E 14,99! No way! Bol.com doesn’t have ‘War of the Worlds’ but they sell ‘Arrival’. It will be released on march 22nd 2017. That is too late and the dvd is also too expensive. How to solve this problem? I was very glad our English teacher told us about 123movies. I used it: https://123movies.is/ . There you can watch your favourite movies online and it is for free.
Most of the time I watched the movies at school on the IPad from school. I started watching ‘War of the Worlds’. ‘War of the Worlds ’sounds like a lot of action and I do like action films. Then I watched ‘Alien’ because I liked the cover and there was written ‘horror’ in the top 250 of the imdb site. At the end I did not find it so exciting as I expected. The last film I watched was ‘Arrival’.
I also watched part of the movies on TV at home. I had to watch them without subtitles on and English spoken. That is written in task 1 and I did so. It was not very difficult to understand what they said in the movie. Because of that it was enough to watch them only one time.
What triggers me about aliens? The universe is so big. May be there are other forms of life. Somewhere in the universe there must be. I do believe that. I think that there are many spectacular things to discover, like other living worlds and creatures.
A lot of UFO’s are already seen and there are also strange signs found in the ground. Even the Egyptians seemed to have been in contact with aliens. Aliens is a subject you can fantasize about. You can let your imagination run wild. Others already did. You can watch it here.
How will creatures from outer space will come to us? Do they come in peace to trade or exchange knowledge? Or is it to take us over? Will there be war? How do they look like? And how will communication take place?
In the film ‘Alien’ there is no communication between the alien and the crew. The alien uses a crewmember as host for breeding a new alien. In this movie the alien is a hunting and killing creature. It destroys every human that could be a threat to him. The Alien’s life cycle includes the implantation of a larvae inside the living host, the larvae erupts from the host’s chest. Its body looks like that of a crab with the tail of a snake and 8 thin arms with fingernails. It matures into adulthood within hours. Then it seeks out for more hosts for implantation. It looks aggressive, black colour, sharp teeth, the body of a robot-like reptile. The intentions of the alien are not good. It would take over the whole world if it could. So it is a relief when the only surviving crewmember gets rid of this creature before they reach earth.
In the film “War of the World’ you know from the information right in the beginning that the aliens come to take over earth. They come for war. There are two types of alien invaders. One is called a “tripod”. It is metallic and seems to be a vehicle: it walks on three very long legs, it has a large ‘head’ with tentacles dangling underneath. The other alien entities are smaller creatures with large eyes. Their eyes look dull and silver. Its rib cage looks like that of a human. It has a beak-like mouth. They have one thin leg and two arms. They make noises, but there is no communication between aliens and humans. Tripods drink human blood to act and move faster. A brutal war takes place. The people have to fight for their lives. At the end it is said: “The aliens’ machines were destroyable by our weapons and technology. But the moment the aliens started breathing our air, drinking our water and eating our food, they were finished.”
Only in the last of the three movies aliens and humans really communicate. In ‘Arrival’ communication is the main subject. 12 unidentified flying objects enter Earth’s orbit. They don’t attack and the big question is: What do they want? A linguistic expert is brought in to find out. The Heptapods often look smoke-like and can change form. They are not made of solid material. They look a bit like the form of an octopus with a giant hand. They speak in sounds that echo whale noises. But written language is the way to communicate. Tension of militaries to find a solution nearly starts a war. But that is not necessary. The linguistic expert finds out that the aliens came to bring a gift: language to communicate with each other and they ask for help in over 3000 years. The good intention is clear and the aliens leave earth peaceful.
That is the way I prefer to have contact with aliens. Who knows how great the possibilities are to exchange and help each other in over 3000 years.
