I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man- Muddy Waters – (HQ) – The Johnny Winter Sessions 1976-1981

2017-10-10 (3)

Lyrics

The gypsy woman told my mother
Before I was born
I got a boy-child’s comin’
He’s gonna be a son-of-a-gun
He’s gonna make pretty women’s
Jump and shout
Then the world gonna know
What this all about

Don’t you know I’m here
Everybody knows I’m here
Well, you know I’m the hoochie-coochie man
Everybody knows I’m here

I got a black cat bone
I got a mojo too
I got John the Conqueror
I’m gonna mess with you
I’m gonna make you girls
Lead me by my hand
Then the world’ll know
The hoochie-coochie man

Don’t you know I’m here
Everybody knows I’m here
Well, you know I’m the hoochie-coochie man
Everybody knows I’m here

On the seventh hour
On the seventh day
On the seventh mont
The seventh doctor say
“He was born for good luck
And that you see
I got seven hundred dollars
And don’t you mess with me

But you know I’m here
Everybody knows I’m here
Well, you know I’m the hoochie-coochie man
Everybody knows I’m here

Lyrics

Well, my mama ‘low me just to stay out all night long
Oh, Lord
Well, my mama ‘low me just to stay out all night long
I didn’t care she ‘low, I would boogie anyhow

When I first came to town, people, I was walkin’ down Hastings Street
Everybody was talkin’ about the Henry Swing Club
I decided I drop in there that night
When I got there, I say, “Yes, people”
They was really havin’ a ball
Yes, I know

Boogie Chillen’

One night I was layin’ down
I heard mama and papa talkin’
I heard papa tell mama let that boy boogie-woogie
It’s in him and it got to come out
And I felt so good
Went on boogin’ just the same

Eric Clapton – Key to the highway (HD)

2017-10-10 (5)

Lyrics

I got the key to the highway,
Billed out and bound to go.
I’m gonna leave here running
Walking is most too slow.

I’m going back to the border
Woman, where I’m better known.
You know you haven’t done nothing,
Drove a good man away from home.

When the moon peeks over the mountains
I’ll be on my way.
I’m gonna roam this old highway
Until the break of day.

Oh give me one, one more kiss mama
Just before I go,
‘Cause when I leave this time you know I,
I won’t be back no more.
I got the key to the highway,
Billed out and bound to go.
I’m gonna leave here running;
Walking is most too slow.

I’m going back to the border
Woman, where I’m better known.
You know you haven’t done nothing,
Drove a good man away from home.

Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan – Born Under a Bad Sign

2017-10-10 (6).png

Lyrics

Born under a bad sign
Been down since I began to crawl
If it wasn’t for bad luck, you know I wouldn’t have no luck at all

Hard luck and trouble is my only friend
I been on my own ever since I was ten
Born under a bad sign
Been down since I began to crawl
If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all

I can’t read, haven’t learned how to write
My whole life has been one big fight
Born under a bad sign
I been down since I began to crawl
If it wasn’t for bad luck, I said, I wouldn’t have no luck at all

That ain’t no lie
You know if it wasn’t for bad luck I wouldn’t have no kind o’ luck
If it wasn’t for real bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all

You know wine and women is all I crave
A big legged woman is gonna carry me to my grave
Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all

Yeah, my bad luck boy
Been havin’ bad luck all of my days, yes

2017-10-10 (7)

Lyrics

Ll the love I miss loving, all the kiss I miss kissing
All the love I miss loving, all the kiss I miss kissing
Before I met you baby, never knew what I was missing

All your love, pretty baby, that I got in store for you
All your love, pretty baby, that I got in store for you
I love you pretty baby, well I say you love me too

All your loving, pretty baby, all your loving, pretty baby
All your loving, pretty baby, all your loving, pretty baby
Since I first met you baby, I never knew what I was missing

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby, oh, oh, baby
Since I first met you baby, never knew what I was missing

Howlin’ Wolf – Blues from Hell (Not Now Music) [Full Album]

2017-10-10 (8)

Lyrics:
If you really want some hot water, I can help you find it.
Oh
Oh
Ah yeah
Well, if they catch me around, you’re playing rock the boat
I’m gonna catch Hell
And if you’re throwing your voice in bed singing a note
I’m gonna catch Hell
I know it
That’s right
Try and catch me
Oh yeah
Tricky, tricky
Yeah
Oh
Oh
If you’re getting tricky, lying to yourself
You’re gonna catch Hell
And if you’re testing God, lying to his face
You’re gonna catch Hell
C’mon
Hey
That’s it
They’re gonna catch you
They’re gonna catch you

ZZ TOP – Blue Jean Blues

Lyrics

I done ran into my baby
And finally found my old blue jean
I done ran into my baby
And finally found my old blue jean
Well, I could tell that they was mine
From the oil and the gasoline

If I ever get back my blue jean
Lord, how happy could one man be
If I ever get back my blue jean
Lord, how happy could one man be
‘Cause if I get back those blue jean
You know, my baby be bringin’ ‘em home to me

Floyd Lee Band ~ Mean Blues (2008)

2017-10-10 (12).png

Mean blues feel as an imfamy for me
Mean blues feel as an infamy
Cruel world pullin’ me down
it’s makin’ a hard way for me to see

Three days I haven’t heard from my girlfriend
I know somethin’ is wrong . . .
She left me for another
Left a hole now where my heart belonged

There’s no use for me sayin’
I have to let her go . . .
Ooooh! But nothin’ from her to come back to
Me and blues got me sick and low

Drowned my sorrows with a bottle
until I lose my mind . . .
Drank & drank – Drank the bottom of the East River
That’s where my heart feel fine.

The Nortons – Married to the Blues

2017-10-10 (13)

I never win at love
At love I always lose
I keep looking for a good man
And I ain’t got no clue
I can’t find no one to love me
I guess I’m married to the blues
Married to the blues

There’s a picture by my bedside
In a frame that’s got a crack
Of one of my old lovers
Who ain’t never comin’ back
He swore he’d never leave me
Then I saw him start to pack
Start to pack

Oh when you’re married to the blues
Married to the blues
You don’t get no band of gold
All you get is a lonely cab ride
To a bed that’s always cold
When you’re married to the blues
Forget that honeymoon
All you get is luke-warm lovin’
That’s over way, way too soon

There’s a letter inm why pocket
It’s all torn
Torn and frayed
The only thing
Only thing he left me
When he ran
Ran away
Now when you’re married to the blues
It gets more lonely everyday

Oh… All these blues

I knew he would leave me
He was never comin’ back
He left me a torn letter
Then he ran away
Ran away
Married to the blues
Oh… All these blues

You get so lonely
Lonely
Lonely
Lonely
Married to the blues

Alvin Lee – The Bluest Blues

2017-10-10 (15)

I couldn’t wait to see you, waiting by the door
There’s no one there to meet me, and your clothes are on the floor
Sorry if I hurt you, and I made you cry
Couldn’t stand to see you, with another guy
It’s the bluest blues, and it cuts me like a knife
It’s the bluest blues, since you walked out of my life
Couldn’t really tell you, how you hurt my pride
Something broke within me, down inside
I never knew I loved you, til you went away
Now the loneliness surrounds me, everyday
It’s the bluest blues, since you walked out of the door
It’s the bluest blues, ‘cause I won’t see you no more
I’m sorry if I failed you, if somehow I’m to blame
It’s the bluest blues I’m feeling, it’s a cryin’ shame
I just can’t live without you, face another day
It’s the bluest blues I’m feeling, and it’s here to stay
It’s the bluest blues, and it cuts me to the bone
It’s the bluest blues, when you can’t find your way home
cover

Everyone knows the Blues

Think of the music in the film The Blues Brothers with John Lee Hooker’s ‘Boom Boom Boom’ , Ray Charles’ ‘Shake Your Tail Feather’ , or ‘Think’ of Aretha Franklin  and James Brown’s ‘Can you see the light’ and you think you know already what Blues is. But I was totally wrong. I had no idea that there are so many different Blues genres. Blues is not Blues as you can see on listings of different Blues genres or styles:

Acid blues, African-American Blues, Blues-rock, Boogie-woogie, British blues, Canadian blues, Chicago blues, Classic female blues, Contemporary R&B, Country blues, Delta blues, Detroit blues,   Electric Blues, Gospel blues, Hill country blues, Hokum blues, Jazz blues, Jump blues, Kansas City blues, Louisiana blues, Memphis blues,  Piano blues, Piedmont blues, Punk blues,  Rhythm and blues,  Soul blues, St. Louis blues, Mississippi Delta Blues, Texas Blues, Fire and Drums Blues, East Cost Blues, New Orleans Blues, New York Blues, Swamp Blues,  West Coast Blues. I counted  34 different ones! Most of them I had never heard of.

The story of the Blues began in north-western Mississippi in the late 1800’s. A lot of Africans were brought there to work as slaves on the plantations. These African slaves brought their musical traditions with them when they were transported to North America. Early types of African American music were religious songs (spirituals) and work songs.

Work songs were sung in a rhythm that fit with the movements of the physical work they did. In these songs they used call and response. Phrases from a lead singer were followed by the others. The combination of African music and the folk music of the white European settlers produced a new style of music.

The blues emerged towards the end of the 19th century. This early style of blues was known as country blues. Usually a solo singer was accompanied on guitar or piano. Sometimes harmonica or drums were added. Well-known country blues musicians were Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Robert Johnson.

With the Great Migration of black workers (1916 to 1970) the Blues spread around the south and the rest of the United States. The Great Migration was the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans. From the South they went  to the cities of the North, Midwest and West And so went the blues with them and new styles of blues were developed.

A lot of Blues songs are about problems in life. They have a melancholic or sad sound. The lyrics are often quite boring. You have a lot of repeating of the same sentences. I prefer music that gives me energy and blues doesn’t do that.
