Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit

Songtext:

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It’s fun to lose and to pretend
She’s over-bored and self-assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey

I’m worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it’s hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is from Nirvana’s album ‘Nevermind’. It was released in 1991.

There is a whole story about this song. In August of 1990, Kurt Cobain and Kathleen Hanna (of the band Bikini Kill) were hanging out together near a teen pregnancy center in Olympia. Instead of providing abortions to expecting teenagers, this clinic was actually an pro-life center. The clinic encouraged girls to keep their babies, claiming they would end up in hell otherwise.

Kathleen told later that she and Kurt were angry young feminists in the nineties. Because of that they decided that they were going to do a little public service that night. They drank their Canadian Club. He watched out while she went across the street and wrote “Fake Abortion Clinic Everyone”. Kurt Cobain was more creative. So he went over and in 6 foot tall red letters wrote “God Is King.”

Later that night they were very drunk and returned to Kurt’s motel. While Kurt was sleeping, Kathleen wrote “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” with a Sharpie marker all over the wall. This was a reference to Tobi Vail (drummer of Bikini Kill) who Kurt dated. She used to wear Teen Spirit deodorant. The text was about that Tobi had marked Kurt with her smell.

Kurt Cobain misunderstood the phrase when he woke up and thought it was a rebellious popular saying, like “À Nous La Liberte!”.  When he found out what Teen Spirit was, he was highly upset naming a song after a well-liked deodorant.

After years fans and critics were still trying to understand the meaning of the song. Kurt Cobain gave an explanation for the lyrics in several interviews. But each time he changed the story.  Smells Like Teen Spirit is a song about teenage freedom and revolution and is as non-conforming as the lyrics themselves.

The Pink Floyd, Another Brick In The Wall

Songtext:

We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it’s just another brick in the wall.
All in all you’re just another brick in the wall.

We don’t need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it’s just another brick in the wall.
All in all you’re just another brick in the wall.

‘Another Brick In The Wall’ is from the Pink Floyd album ‘The Wall’. It was released in 1979.

Roger Waters (bassist and singer) wrote this song. It is about his views on formal and strict education. He went to the Cambridgeshire School for Boys. He hated his grammar school teachers and he had the feeling that they were more interested in keeping the kids quiet than teaching them. The wall refers to the wall Waters built around himself because he was not in touch with reality. The bricks in the wall were all the events in his life which made that he built a wall around him. For him was his school teacher another brick in the wall.

So the song is about the “walls” people put up to protect themselves. Any time something bad happens, we are putting up “another brick in the wall.”

Pink Floyd let a school chorus sing in the video. It was made up of 23 kids between the ages of 13 and 15. They were overdubbed 12 times, making it sound like there were many more kids. It didn’t sit well with teachers that kids were singing an anti-school song. The line “We don’t need no education” is grammatically not correct. It’s a double negative and really means “We need education.” This could be a comment on the quality of the schools.

The Rolling Stones, Paint It Black

Songtext:

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors any more, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door I must have it painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts
It’s not easy facing up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors any more, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm, ..
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

‘Paint It Black’is from the Rolling Stones Album ‘Aftermath (US)’. It was released in 1966.

It is a song about death and sadness. It is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed. He feels darkness and life has no colour and joy any more.  He wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: “I don’t know. It’s been done before. It’s not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it.”

http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=474

No colors any more, I want them to turn black/ I look inside myself and see my heart is black / I see my red door I must have it painted black- no joy, happiness and a coulorful life any more, wants it black, dark, sad and can not do something about his feelings

I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black, With flowers – funeral cars with flower decoration on it

With flowers and my love both never to come back / I could not foresee this thing happening to you –  his love died suddenly and unacspected

Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day – newborn baby is birth and it just happens means death, both happen every day.

It is a song about life when you loose someone you love and you have to face it and to live with it.

James Brown (I Got You) I Feel Good

Songtext:

Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now
I feel good, I knew that I would, now
So good, so good, I got you

Whoa! I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, I got you

{ sax, two licks to bridge }

When I hold you in my arms
I know that I can’t do no wrong
And when I hold you in my arms
My love won’t do you no harm

And I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, I got you

{ sax, two licks to bridge }

When I hold you in my arms
I know that I can’t do no wrong
And when I hold you in my arms
My love can’t do me no harm

And I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, well I got you

Whoa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now
I feel good, I knew that I would
So good, so good, ‘cause I got you
So good, so good, ‘cause I got you
So good, so good, ‘cause I got you

‘I Feel Good (I Got You) is from James Brown’s album ‘Out Of Sight’. It was released in 1964.

It is a song full of life and happiness – I feel good. ‘I feel good’ because ‘I got you’. He is in love. He is in a great mood: I feel nice like sugar and spice.

The lyrics are not a poem/poetry. It is like you speak and tell the whole word that you are in love.

http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2260:

The words are accented to hit the beats and support the song’s rhythm. Some of the movies that used this song are Good Morning, Vietnam, The Nutty Professor, White Men Can’t Jump,Undercover Brother and Transformers. TV shows that used it: The Simpsons, Miami Vice and The Cosby Show.

The White Stripes, Seven Nations Army

Songtext:

I’m gonna fight ‘em off
A seven nation army couldn’t hold me back
They’re gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And I’m talkin’ to myself at night
Because I can’t forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette
And the message comin’ from my eyes says, “Leave it alone.”
Don’t wanna hear about it
Every single one’s got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell
And if I catch it comin’ back my way
I’m gonna serve it to you
And that ain’t what you want to hear
But that’s what I’ll do
And the feeling coming from my bones says, “Find a home.”
I’m going to Wichita
Far from this opera for evermore
I’m gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I’m bleeding, and I’m bleeding, and I’m bleeding
Right before the lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
And I will think no more
And the stains comin’ from my blood tell me, “Go back home.”

‘The White Stripes’ is from the Seven Nations Army album ‘Elephant’. It was realeased in 2003.

This song is about  the growing popularity  of the group ‘The White Stripes’ and tells the negative things that came with it. After White came up with the riff (a series of notes that is repeated), he came up with a storyline in which the central figure comes into town and all his friends are gossiping about him. They are spreading rumors and talk behind his back.”He feels so bad he has to leave town, but you get so lonely you come back,” said White. “The song’s about gossip. It’s about me, Meg and the people we’re dating.”

U2,Sunday Bloody Sunday

Songtext:

I can’t believe the news today
I can’t close my eyes and make it go away.
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
‘Cos tonight
We can be as one, tonight.

Broken bottles under children’s feet
Bodies strewn across the dead-end street.
But I won’t heed the battle call
It puts my back up, puts my back up against the wall.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Oh, let’s go.

And the battle’s just begun
There’s many lost, but tell me who has won?
The trenches dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
‘Cos tonight
We can be as one, tonight.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away.
I’ll wipe your tears away.
I’ll wipe your tears away.
I’ll wipe your bloodshot eyes.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

And it’s true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality.
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die.

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On…

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday..

‘Sunday, Bloody Sunday’ is from the U2’s album ‘War’. It was released in 1983.

The song is about the Irish history when catolics and protestants were fighting each other. There are two Bloody Sundays in the Irish history. The first was in 1920 when British troops fired into the crowd at a football match in Dublin. That was  a punishment or revenge for the killing of British undercover agents.

The second Bloody Sunday was on January 30, 1972, when British paratroopers killed 13 Irish citizens at a civil rights protest in Derry, Northern Ireland.

The song is more about the second Bloody Sunday.

Red Hot Chili Peppers,  Californication

Songtext:

Psychic spies from China
Try to steal your mind’s elation
And little girls from Sweden
Dreams of silver screen quotation
And if you want these kind of dreams
It’s Californication

It’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the East
At least it settles in the final location
It’s understood that Hollywood
Sells Californication

Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is that war your waging

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Californication

Marry me girl be my fairy to the world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information
And buy me a star on the boulevard
It’s Californication

Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And Alderaan’s not far away
It’s Californication

Born and raised by those who praise
Control of population everybody’s been there and
I don’t mean on vacation

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Californication

Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar
They’re just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldn’t save the world
From Californication

Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Sicker than the rest
There is no test
But this is what you’re craving

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Californication

‘Californicication’ is from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’album ‘Californicication’. It was released in 1999.

The song is about California and its society, it reflects how the world is becoming very superficial and plastic.

The lyrics, “Cobain can you hear the spheres singing songs off station to station and Alderaan’s not far away, it’s Californication” get in a few pop-culture references – Kurt Cobain, David Bowie’s album Station To Station, and Alderaan – the planet princess Leia was from in Star Wars. Alderaan was destroyed by The Empire, implying that the world is being destroyed.

“Pay your surgeon very well/ To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin” (area onder mouth, jawbone)
“Or is that war your waging “(carry on) – is all about plastic surgery and the obsession with being forever young, the image that Hollywood sells.

“And buy me a star on the boulevard / It’s Californication”-The dream of becoming famous in California and getting a star on the Walk of Fame.

Herman Brood, Saturday Night

Songtext:

The neon light, of the Open all night
Was just in time replaced by the magic appearance of a new day-while
A melancholic Reno was crawling on his back just in
Front of the supermarket door-way child

Hey girl, on a cold summer night
As we stood on the corner
As a man passed by and asked us
What we were doing what we need
As he pointed his big fat finger
To the people hangin’ round at the corner of the – other side of street
Oh well

Doin’ nothing, just hanging around
What do you mean doin’ nothing Sir
So we had to hit him to the ground
Doin’ nothing just hanging around
His head all busted lookin’ just a little to wise child

I just can’t wait
I just can’t wait for Saturday night
For Saturday night
For Saturday night
Saturday night

Saturday night
Saturday night
Saturday night

I just can’t wait
I just can’t wait

Herman Brood was a Dutch musician and painter. After his suicide in 2001 he was called “the greatest and only Dutch rock ‘n’ roll star” on the Dutch radio.  The song ‘Saturday Night’ is from the album ‘Saturday Night Live!’. It came out in 1992. Saturday Night is actually not about Saturday night but about Sunday morning.

“The neon light, of the open all night, was just in time replaced by the magic appearance of a new day

The lyrics of the song tell a strange story. It is far from reality. All happens on the street in front of a supermarket. There are a lot of questions. Why is a melancholic Reno (in Spanish is a reno a reindeer) crawling on his back just in front of the supermarket door? Who is he? And why do they hit a man to the ground? He only asked what they were doing or what they need.

This man pointed with his fat finger to people hanging around at a corner of the other side of the street. Perhaps this is about dealing with drugs.

And who is the girl? And who is the child Herman Brood mentions twice in his song? What is so special about the saturday night that he can’t wait for the next one?

Michael Jackson, Thriller

Songtext :

It’s close to midnight and something evil’s lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream, but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
You’re paralyzed

‘Cause this is thriller, thriller at night
And no one’s gonna save you from the beast about to strike
You know it’s thriller, thriller night
You’re fighting for your life inside a killer thriller, tonight

You hear the door slam and realize there’s nowhere left to run
You feel the cold hand and wonder if you’ll ever see the sun
You close your eyes and hope that this is just imagination
But all the while you hear a creature creepin’ up behind
You’re out of time

‘Cause this is thriller, thriller at night
There ain’t no second chance against the thing with forty eyes
You know it’s thriller, thriller night
You’re fighting for your life inside a killer thriller tonight

Night creatures call
And the dead start to walk in their masquerade
There’s no escapin’ the jaws of the alien this time
(They’re open wide)
This is the end of your life

They’re out to get you; there’s demons closing in on every side
They will possess you unless you change that number on your dial
Now is the time for you and I to cuddle close together, yeah
All through the night I’ll save you from the terror on the screen
I’ll make you see

That it’s a thriller, thriller night
‘Cause I can thrill you more than any ghoul
Would ever dare try
This is thriller, thriller night
So let me hold you tight and share a killer, diller chiller
Thriller here tonight

That it’s a thriller, thriller night
‘Cause I can thrill you more than any ghoul
Could ever dare try
This is thriller, thriller night
Girl so let me hold you tight and share a killer, thriller
I’m gonna thrill ya tonight

Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y’awl’s neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse’s shell

The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

‘Thriller’ is from Michael Jackson’s album ‘Thriller’. It was released in 1983.

Thriller is a rare pop song with a horror theme. The description that it is close to midnight, something evil’s lurking (hiding) in the dark, a sight that almost stops your hart comes with noises like a creaking door, footsteps on the floor and thunder. You are at the wrong place at the wrong time and you will not get away from there.

The opening title card (“Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that this film in no way endorses a belief in the occult”) was inserted due to Jackson’s Jehovah’s Witness faith.

Money for nothin’ chicks for free

(Money for nothin’ chicks for free) (I want my, I want my MTV)
Easy, easy money for nothin’ chicks for free) (I want my, I want my MTV)
(Money for nothin’ chicks for free)

‘Money For Nothing’ is from the Dire Straits’ album ‘Brothers In Arms’. It was released in 1985.

Mark Knopfler wrote the song when he was in a store. He overheard a conversation between two delivery men and used it as a songtext. They complained about their hard work and how easy rock stars have it. Rock stars are not stupid. They get money for nothin'(nothing) and chicks ( a girl or young woman) for free. They ‘maybe get a blister on their little finger, maybe get a blister on their thumb’ from only playing the guitar on MTV but thats all, they ain’t (aren’t) working.

The line ‘I want my MTV’ was the basis of the cable network’s promotion campaign. They played clips of musicians saying, and often times, screaming the line between videos.

The Rolling Stones, Sympathy For The Devil

songtext:

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man’s soul to waste

And I was ‘round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general’s rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
(Woo woo, woo woo)

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
(Woo woo, woo woo)

I shouted out,
“Who killed the Kennedys?”
When after all
It was you and me
(Who who, who who)

Let me please introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
(Woo woo, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
(Who who)
But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
(Who who, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what’s confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
(Woo woo, who who)

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
‘Cause I’m in need of some restraint
(Who who, who who)

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
(Woo woo)
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I’ll lay your soul to waste, mm yeah
(Woo woo, woo woo)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mm yeah
(Who who)
But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mm mean it, get down
(Woo woo, woo woo)

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
(Woo woo)

Tell me baby, what’s my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what’s my name
I tell you one time, you’re to blame

Oh, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What’s my name
Tell me, baby, what’s my name
Tell me, sweetie, what’s my name

Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Woo woo
Woo woo

‘Sympathy For The Devil’ is from the Rolling Stones Album ‘Beggars Banquet’. It was released in 1968.

In this song Mick Jagger introduces himself as antichrist ‘just call me Lucifer … stole many a man’s soul to waste’.  He tells that he was around when really bad things happened. He refers to events and persons in the bible and the history of the 20th century:

Bible: Jesus Christ, Pilate, the last czar, Anastasia, the blitzkrieg, the Kennedys.

He was ‘round when Jesus Christ was crucified and made that Pilate washed his hands and sealed Jesus’ fate.

He stuck around St. Petersburg and decided that it was time for a change. ‘Killed the czar and his ministers’ and ‘Anastasia screamed in vain’ refers to the civil war in Russia when the last czar Nicholas II and his family (also his daughter Anastasia 1901-1918) were executed. Later there were rumours that the duchess Anastasia had survived.

He rode a tank and held a general’s rank. A general has the power to kill people like in the blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg was a German term for ‘lightning war’. It is a military tactic to create disorganization among the enemy forces. It is a short military action. German forces used it in World War II for the first time against Poland in 1939.

“Who killed the Kennedys?” It was you and me.

In 2002 Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones said in an interview about it: “It’s just a matter of looking the Devil in the face. He’s there all the time. I’ve met him several times. Evil – people tend to bury it and hope it sorts itself out. Don’t forget him. If you confront him, then he’s out of a job.” Mick Jagger said that the song is more about the evils of mankind than the supernatural devil figure.

So you can meet evil everywhere. It is important to look in his face.
